Artist Statement

I have always been aware of people and place, particularly in the the context of nostalgia and memory. During my formative years in Johannesburg the trauma of apartheid steered me to develop my current practice into one that is focused particularly on presence and absence.  I am intrigued by these things because, being born in South Africa and moving to Canada at a young age, I identified with being the Other early on. The impact of those feelings, as well as the reaction and action of those around me has shaped my practice immensely.

I work with many materials, though I am work primarily in glass as well as fibre and textiles. Much of my work is processed based. I am very interested in the play of line, form and function. I often use multiples in my work as it engages a larger amount of space and creates within it the possibility of more ways to play with space. The goal of my practice is to engage the viewer to see the hidden or absent. It is my goal for them to discover a different way of viewing my pieces and the world at large; a chance to reconsider the framework of perspectives. The use of shadow to create imagery features heavily in my works. I find that my work bleeds between the art and craft worlds with many ideas and concepts being integrated along the way.
